The temples were already becoming a blur but when we got to temple 10 and Yahiro San told me the rumour that climbing the 333 stairs would rid women of their misfortunes, it was hard not to thrust my pack at him and sprint up them four at a time.

Ever since I was about 16, I had been on a personal mission to unravel who was under the layers my surroundings had wrapped around me so when we finally got to the top, I let my inner pyromaniac loose and lit everything there was to light. I gonged every bell I could find and prayed to every deity that had fallopian tubes. Then finally, as we descended the stairs, having seen all the coins on them as we were going up, I got a handful out of my purse and threw them out in front of me shouting "Here's to well-being!" with a conviction that Louise L Hay could've written a book about.
