Note To Self: Must remember that natural consequence of going to bed early is waking early. Useful information for getting to work on time.
As I was checking-in the previous night, I recognised the look on the lady's face.
Pitch blankness.
She had absolutely no idea at all what I was saying - ever - and would almost hyperventilate if I even threatened to speak. I worked out that it was best just to say nothing, nod a lot, keep my hands where she could see them and move very slowly.
As she showed me to my room, I interpreted her charades to mean that 'breakfasto' was included in the price and she would bring it to my room at 6:30am. Knowing the Japanese strict adherence to anything that went tick tock, I realised at 6:40 that I wasn't getting breakfasto delivered to my room. In fact, I wasn't positive I was getting breakfasto at all, so I scoffed a quick bun then went downstairs.
Luckily I had my pack on because I only leapt 3 feet in the air instead of the potential 22 when the lady lunged at me. She said 'BREAKFASTO?!!' with such panic that I thought she might have a nervous breakdown any minute. I said Hai! and quickly sat down where she indicated. Despite the meal being slightly cold by now I had never tasted such divine salmon! If I wasn't in such a hurry, and if I didn't think it would tip the lady over the edge completely, I might have tried for fourths.
A man was pacing outside and I knew he was waiting to take me back to temple 11. I skulled my miso and quickly said thank you and goodbye to the lady. I was completely sympathetic to her traumatised maneki-neko wave and the smile she could surely hear out of...
