May 20 cont...
Suddenly civilization resumed at full volume with traffic, people and the mysterious Henro signs reappearing. It felt to me like I had been diverted on purpose and if felt like it was a worth every minute of the two hours I had been lost.
I followed the signs then a lady pointed over to a hill and said Cable Car. Ah - finally the cable car that I had heard about. There was no way I was walking up another mountain with my feet in the near perilous state they were in so I headed the way she showed me.
I saw a Henro marker then regular signs with a symbol that looked like a mountain that had some Japanese writing underneath. It seemed logical to me that it was the branding of the Cable Car and seeing as though I could see the tracks going up the mountain, and the signs were heading me in that direction, I followed them.
They were actually for an exotic boutique shopping, restaurant place that looked almost like a Temple courtyard.
I asked the Maitre D which way to the Cable Car. He led me enthusiastically through the people waiting and took me out onto the street to give me directions to go Hidari – Left.
I laboured up the winding hill for another 15 minutes and finally got to it.
It was the oddest retro looking Cable Car I had ever seen and I nicknamed it Thomas the Cable Car.
I bought an icecream to enjoy on the journey up.
Although I had rested, my feet were sorer than they had ever been and felt broken and bruised. I walked very gingerly to Temple 85 and did my thing.
As I was getting my stamp, a super fit guy I had seen a few times said Konichiwa. I asked him which way I was to go next then said thank you after he had showed me and left in that direction.
