On my walk to Temple 78, I met some real characters...
I was very tired and my back felt like it could do with a months holiday when a little white van pulled over to the side of the busy multi lane main road and the elderly couple rushed out, talking 90 miles an hour.
They were the couple who had once been quite debonair and were still wearing those very same clothes from 20 years ago - all tattered and faded but still giving a glimpse of who they once were and who they still saw themselves as.
I quickly realised they were the enthusiastic'English speakers' I mentioned when I met Nakano San the first time in the cafe. Their English was limited and the lady could see, by the way that I bent over to rest my pack further up my back, that I was sore and tired, so, trying to be patient and polite, she kept trying to prise her husband away. He was so excited that he didn't notice her and kept asking more questions.
After about 10 minutes, he finally released me.
On the way back to the Train station, and not far from the Van couple had stopped me, I dropped into a tiny second hand clothes kiosk. The couple were by far the coolest I had come across and I would have loved to make friends with them. They reminded me of a laid back surfing couple, who just enjoyed each others company and what they were into without trying to be anything other than who they were...
