Later on, at the train station, I tried to explain to Takashi San that when I met him I had limited money and needed to rush but now that my brother had offered to put money in my account, I could take my time, therefore, tomorrow we would go separate ways.
It was hard to convey this without being able to articulate how appreciative I had been of his offer and the generosity thus far, not seeming like I had merely used him because I was desperate.
Then I started having doubts.
He was such a special person and the situation was, seemingly, Kobo Daishi – Heaven sent. Was I complicating something that had presented itself so easily?
We sat down and looked at maps and realized that, despite money readjustment, even by myself, I would be doing the same route as Takashi San tomorrow. I tried to explain then that, if we are going in the same direction, we may as well do it together seeing as though we were friends.
It was a very difficult concept to get (a backtrack) after what I had taken 30 minutes to explain earlier.
On the train Takashi San had a deeply intense conversation with an older woman sitting opposite us. She referred to us being Henro and she had been Henro herself a number of times. Takashi San was very moved by her and both had tears in their eyes when she got off. We all waved emphatically till she was out of view.
